Our specialists have expertise in providing perioperative care to patients with cardiac disease who are undergoing cardiac surgery. We deliver anesthesia to adult patients for many types of operations, including coronary artery revascularization, valve replacement and repair, and open and endovascular thoracic aorta repair. In addition, we provide anesthesia for structural heart procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement and transcatheter mitral edge-to-edge repair. We perform and interpret intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography to facilitate surgical planning, guide hemodynamic interventions, and assess the immediate results of surgery in real-time. Cardiac surgery is complex and our team of anesthesiologists interface with health care providers throughout the hospital to implement the optimal care plan for each patient preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively.
Cardiothoracic anesthesia subspecialty training also comprises expertise in thoracic anesthesia, including lung resection, esophageal resection, and airway surgery. These procedures often require advanced airway management, including the placement and management of specialized double lumen endotracheal tubes and bronchial blockers to facilitate single lung ventilation during the operation. When appropriate, we place regional anesthesia blocks or epidural catheters to improve postoperative pain for these procedures. We work closely with our thoracic surgeons as part of a coordinated effort to provide the highest level of care to each patient.
