Preparing residents to become thoughtful, effective, and academically productive clinician-educators.

The Clinician Educator Track (CET) is a longitudinal educational pathway designed for CA-2 and CA-3 residents interested in developing the skills necessary to become effective clinician-educators and pursuing careers in academic medicine.

Teaching is an essential component of academic anesthesiology, yet residents interested in clinical education may have limited opportunities for structured training in educational theory, curriculum development, teaching methodology, assessment, and medical education scholarship. The CET will provide residents with a structured framework to cultivate these skills while simultaneously creating meaningful opportunities to improve longitudinal education to medical students and colleagues. The CET is composed of self-directed learning, experiential teaching, faculty-resident mentorship, and educational scholarship projects providing resources and a structured framework to excel as academic clinician-teachers.

Residents who successfully complete all track requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion in Clinician-Educator Training at graduation as recognition of their specialized training in leading medical education. Completion of the track will provide residents with documented educational training, teaching experience, mentorship, and scholarship that can support fellowship applications and future careers in academic medicine. 

Goals and Objectives

The overarching goal of the CET is to prepare residents to become thoughtful, effective, and academically productive clinician-educators.

Upon completion of the track, residents should be able to:

  1. Apply principles of adult learning theory to the education of medical students, residents, and other learners.
  2. Design and deliver effective educational experiences using appropriate teaching strategies for lectures, workshops, simulation sessions, and clinical environments.
  3. Provide effective and constructive feedback and assessment to learners and incorporate feedback into their own development as educators.
  4. Receive interval evaluations and structured feedback about clinical education skills to be integrated into their own practice and development as educators.
  5. Develop practical experience as a medical educator through longitudinal participation in preclinical and clinical medical student education.
  6. Develop foundational skills in curriculum development, including identification of educational needs, development of learning objectives, implementation of educational interventions, and assessment of outcomes.
  7. Design and implement an education-focused scholarship project over the course of the duration of the CET pathway. The projects will be mentored by experienced faculty members and presented during Grand Rounds with concurrent submission to national conferences if applicable. 
  8. Develop skills in educational leadership through participation in medical student programming and departmental educational initiatives.
  9. Develop an academic teaching portfolio that can support future fellowship applications, faculty appointments, and careers in academic anesthesiology.
