First-Year Experience
Anesthesiology Residency Program
We are proud to offer our residents an outstanding clinical experience. Our diverse and rich clinical service serves as an ideal site for training future anesthesia consultants.
Rhode Island Hospital serves as our main clinical site. It is Rhode Island’s largest hospital and New England’s busiest level 1 trauma center. At Rhode Island Hospital, residents will be exposed to the full spectrum of adult tertiary anesthetic practice through both general and sub-specialty rotations.
A sample of these rotations includes:
Cardiac Anesthesia: Rhode Island Hospital performs over 550 open heart procedures, and more than 150 percutaneous valve implantations each year. All of our cardiac anesthesiology staff are fellowship trained and certified in peri-operative transesophageal echocardiography. During these procedures residents work one-on-one directly with an attending cardiac anesthesiologist. There is a focus on the management of patients with complex cardiovascular disease processes and their unique anesthetic requirements. From early in their training, residents will begin to learn the fundamentals of transesophageal echocardiography.
Pediatric Anesthesia: The renowned Hasbro Children’s Hospital (a division of Rhode Island Hospital) is our clinical site for the care of pediatric patients. At Hasbro, residents work with pediatric fellowship trained anesthesiologists to care for patients of all ages; from neonates to teenagers. The absence of fellows allows residents to participate in high complexity cases which are typically reserved for pediatric anesthesia fellows at other institutions.
Regional Anesthesia: Regional anesthesia fellowship trained anesthesiologists will work closely with residents throughout their regional anesthesia rotation. This important part of modern anesthetic practice will predominately focus on our busy orthopedic service. Residents will become facile with both ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks and neuraxial anesthesia techniques.
Thoracic Anesthesia: Rhode Island Hospital is home to a busy thoracic surgery service which regularly performs both thoracoscopic and open lung procedures. On this rotation, residents will learn to care for patients with complex pulmonary physiology, employ various lung isolation strategies, and master advanced airway management techniques such as fiberoptic bronchoscopy.
Vascular Anesthesia: Our vascular surgical service is at the forefront of surgical practice, employing the latest in endovascular surgical techniques as well as more traditional open procedures. Residents on this rotation will work closely with attending anesthesiologists in the management of patients with a large burden of comorbid diseases undergoing major vascular procedures.
Neuroanesthesia: Our busy neuroanesthesia service provides care for a broad spectrum of neurosurgical patients. On this rotation, residents will care for patients undergoing complex spine surgery, intracranial tumor resections, neurovascular procedures, and state-of-the-art surgical treatments for seizure disorders.
Critical Care Medicine: Working with anesthesia critical care fellowship trained intensivists, residents will spend time in the Cardiothoracic Surgery ICU. In addition to patient-specific learning during daily rounds, a structured educational program will ensure residents develop both the technical and cognitive skills required to care for critically ill patients. Additionally, focused education on the use of ultrasound, including transthoracic echocardiography, in the evaluation of critically ill patients will be integrated into the didactic program.
Obstetric Anesthesia: Residents will obtain their obstetric anesthesia training and education at Women's and Infants Hospital, located within the same medical center as Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital. W&I features one of the busiest labor and delivery services in the country, complete with high-risk OB and a world-class neonatal intensive care unit.
Pain Medicine: Residents will complete an immersive experience in chronic pain. Working under the supervision of anesthesia-trained pain physicians, trainees will learn to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of pathologies. With an emphasis on procedural intervention, Brown residents can expect to have a hands-on role in the care of patients. Pain medicine rotations are completed at the Providence VA or at the Norman Prince Spine Institute.
